Dustin Shillcox
Advocate, Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation
Dustin Shillcox was your average 26-year-old man who had his entire future mapped out. On August 26, 2010, his life changed in an instant. While making a delivery for work, a tire blew out on his van and sent him into a cable that lined the median. Dustin broke his back, sternum, elbow, four ribs and his lungs collapsed; he had bleeding to the brain and injured his spine at T5, which left him paralyzed from the chest down.
After seeing a PSA that featured groundbreaking research from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, Shillcox was selected as the fourth participant for a study that measured the impact of epidural stimulation on a chronic, complete spinal cord injury.
Within weeks, the epidural stimulator enabled Shillcox to stand, voluntarily move his legs, and recover critical autonomic functions. Now living in Fort Worth, Texas, Dustin is a motivational speaker and works with the Reeve Foundation to raise awareness for the next phase of epidural stimulation research.
